Bougainvillea make excellent Bonsai. They come from Asia and South America and do bear flowers.
They belong to the Nyctaginaceae family – part tree and part vine. Bougainvillea becoming a Bonsai Tree is an American adaptation.
Growing a Bougainvillea is relatively easy as they don’t require a lot of water, fertilizer although a high nitrogen fertilizer will help and only requires 4 hours of sun light a day.
They can be grown indoors or outdoors and can flower year round. If you keep it outside and have cold winters, bring it inside before the frost. It likes warmth better than cold – remember it is from Asia and South America.
To keep it looking its best, you will need to prune it. Use cutters to trim some of the branches and a sealant to seal the cuts.
Also remember to prune the roots when it is time to transplant it into a larger bowl.
In addition to pruning you will need to pinch off some of the growth to keep its shape.
This is a relatively easy Bonsai to grow and experiment with your shaping, pinching and pruning. Give it a try and I think you will like it.
