Some Bonsai Techniques

Bonsai Tree

Bonsai trees can live a long time and the techniques associated with them take time to master.  If you have just purchased your first Bonsai Tree look for local resources such as clubs and classes.  Learn the techniques from those who have already mastered them.

Lets go over a few techniques.

  • Learn to trim you tree so is looks good and has the shape you desire to produce.  If you need to trim branches (prune)  use cutters designed for this purpose.  Don’t use regular scissors as they can cause extra damage to the tree.
  • Pinching is a trimming technique that you will want to use frequently.  By pinching the growth between to index finger and thumb, you trim the tree.
  • Transfer into larger pot as it grows.  When this becomes necessary, you may also need to prune the roots.  But don’t prune the roots until the new pot and new soil is ready for transplant.  Don’t leave the roots exposed any longer than necessary.
  • Bending is another technique.  Commonly wire is used for this purpose.  Don’t tie it too tight, remember the branches need to grow.
  • Feeding your Bonsai is a necessary technique.  Find the type of fertilizer you want – liquid or solid – and use it.  Be sure to read the directions.

If you learn how to care for your new Bonsai Tree, it can out live you in many cases.  So keep it happy so it can keep you happy.
