Japanese Black Pine Bonsai Tree
(pinus thunbergii ‘kotobuki’)
Black pine is sturdy beautiful tree – excellent Bonsai Tree. One of the most common Bonsai Tree and can mature into a fantastic tree.
Soil should be a mix of half akadama and half pumice mix. For a young tree use more girt. You want the soil to drain well.
Keep the soil evenly moist but do not over water. The black pine can tolerate a little dryness.
If you can use water a little on the acid side – between 5.5 and 6.5 pH. Be sure to wet the soil thoroughly.
Your black pine will love a lot of sun. During the extremely hot times monitor the soil for moisture frequently. If the temperature reaches 100 degrees or more let it have some shade. If the needles turn yellow it may be because of too much heat and sun.
Prune the tree during the fall or winter. You can prune large branches in the spring – apply a putty paste to seal the cut.
Prune a little at a time. Try to reduce the pine over years not months. Be patient and take your time.
Repot your tree every other year when they are young and every three years when they have matured. When cutting roots be careful not to cut too much. After you repotted the tree place it in a bright shade for a few weeks to recover.
Now enjoy your Black Pine Bonsai.
